APM Mukah Responds Swiftly to Wasp Nest Complaint

MUKAH – A swift response by emergency personnel helped resolve a public safety concern involving a wasp nest discovered inside a residential property.

The incident, reported on 19 February, prompted action from the Civil Defence Force after a resident alerted authorities about a nest located in the ceiling of their home.

Such cases are not uncommon in Sarawak, where tropical conditions often encourage insects to build nests in sheltered parts of houses.

A team from Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia in Mukah was deployed shortly after receiving the call. Upon arrival, personnel assessed the situation and identified a wasp nest measuring approximately 10 inches in length.

Given the potential danger posed by wasps, especially when nests are disturbed, the team carried out a controlled removal operation.

Using insecticide spray and a fire-based method, the nest was safely destroyed without causing harm to the occupants or property.

Officials noted that wasp nests in residential areas can pose significant risks, particularly to individuals who may be allergic to stings. Quick reporting and professional handling are therefore crucial to prevent injuries.

The operation was completed efficiently, reflecting the preparedness and experience of the response team in dealing with such incidents.

Authorities also expressed appreciation to the public for promptly notifying them, which allowed for timely intervention.

Residents have been reminded to remain vigilant and avoid attempting to remove insect nests on their own, as improper handling can provoke aggressive behaviour from wasps. Instead, they are encouraged to contact trained personnel equipped with the necessary tools and expertise.

The Civil Defence Force continues to play a key role in responding to various non-disaster emergencies, including pest-related issues, in addition to its broader responsibilities in disaster management and community safety.

Members of the public in Mukah can reach emergency assistance services at any time through the official hotline.
