MALÉ – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has arrived in the Maldives to lead a Malaysian delegation on an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Anwar said he arrived safely in the Republic of Maldives last night following an invitation from Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The visit is being undertaken as part of Malaysia’s MADANI Diplomacy approach, with the prime minister saying the mission is intended to further develop the longstanding relationship between Malaysia and the Maldives.
In a statement, Anwar called for prayers for the success of the diplomatic mission, which he said was focused on strengthening ties for the benefit of people in both countries.
Malaysia and the Maldives have maintained diplomatic relations for nearly six decades. The latest official visit comes against the backdrop of those longstanding ties and reflects the two countries’ continued engagement at government level.
Anwar’s presence in the Maldives as head of the Malaysian delegation places the bilateral relationship at the centre of the official programme. The visit is also expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to reaffirm their friendly relations and discuss areas of mutual interest.
The prime minister described the engagement as part of Malaysia’s MADANI Diplomacy mission, linking the visit to the government’s broader diplomatic efforts to maintain and develop relationships with other countries.
Rather than focusing solely on government-to-government relations, Anwar said the objective was ultimately to bring benefits to the people of Malaysia and the Maldives. His remarks highlighted the importance of maintaining close ties between the two nations as their diplomatic relationship approaches six decades.
The official visit follows an invitation from President Muizzu, underlining the role of direct engagement between the leadership of both countries in sustaining bilateral relations.
For Malaysia, the visit provides an opportunity to engage with the Maldivian government at the highest level and reinforce existing diplomatic links. For the Maldives, the arrival of the Malaysian delegation marks another high-level exchange between the two countries.
Anwar did not provide further details in his statement on the specific outcomes expected from the visit or the issues scheduled for discussion. He instead emphasised the broader diplomatic objective of strengthening relations between Malaysia and the Maldives.
The prime minister’s remarks also placed the visit within the longer history of bilateral relations, which date back nearly six decades.
