BARIO: The Bario short take-off and landing airport (STOLport) is undergoing a major upgrade to enhance operational safety and efficiency — a move that will soon allow Twin Otter aircraft to fly at full passenger capacity.
Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that current safety limitations, set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), only permit nine passengers per flight at Bario STOLport. Once the runway upgrades are completed, the aircraft will be able to safely carry up to 19 passengers per trip.
“This upgrade will significantly benefit the rural community in Bario by improving flight access and connectivity,” he said in a media statement following a site visit on Tuesday.
As of May 2025, the project is ahead of schedule, with 30.46% completion against the original plan of 26.63%. The site was handed over on 4 September 2024, and the project is expected to be completed by 3 March 2026, within its 18-month contract period.
The RM20 million project is fully funded by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Transport Malaysia. Major components include:
- Extending the runway from 671m to 930m with 18m width
- Resurfacing the original runway for better durability and safety
- New clearway to enhance takeoff performance
- Perimeter fencing, wind indicators, and Automatic Weather System (AWS)
- Additional apron extension and taxiway (proposed)
- Improved passenger parking and landscaping (proposed)
Lee also highlighted the weather-related limitations at the airstrip, noting that flights are only permitted until 4pm daily. He plans to discuss additional solutions with Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department and Mulu State Assemblyman, especially to handle peak travel periods such as the Nukenen Festival and Christmas.
Plans are also in place to propose increased flight frequencies and a new dual-purpose apron capable of accommodating two DHC6 Twin Otter aircraft and two EC175 helicopters, ensuring better flexibility during emergencies or seasonal surges in travel.
“These developments will ensure STOLport Bario meets growing demands while offering a safer and more comfortable travel experience for the highlands’ communities,” Lee concluded.
