Ceasefire Achieved in Putrajaya, Strengthens ASEAN Unity and Stability
KUALA LUMPUR — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has successfully brokered a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, ending months of escalating conflict along their shared border. The historic ceasefire, achieved through a special meeting in Putrajaya, showcases Malaysia’s growing diplomatic influence in the ASEAN region.

The breakthrough was reached after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai met under Anwar’s leadership. Both leaders agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with the restoration of peace starting at midnight.
The border conflict, which began on May 28 in the Preah Vihear region, had resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier and heightened military tensions on both sides. Anwar’s timely intervention has not only prevented further loss of life but also reaffirmed Malaysia’s role as a peacemaker in Southeast Asia.
Chairman of the RIGHTS Foundation, Mohd Yusmadi Mohd Yusoff, applauded the move, describing it as a triumph for diplomacy and the ASEAN spirit. He praised Anwar’s inclusive and principled leadership, calling it a beacon of hope for preventive diplomacy across the region.
“Anwar Ibrahim has again proven that regional disputes can be resolved through dialogue and mutual respect. This is not just a diplomatic win but a humanitarian victory for the people of Cambodia and Thailand,” said Yusmadi, who also authored Anwar Ibrahim: Global Justice and Peace Through Dialogue.
He further urged ASEAN nations to use this success as a model to institutionalize dialogue-based conflict resolution and to strengthen regional cooperation in preventing future conflicts.
