KUCHING – Students and schools from communities around Kampung Semeba took part in educational activities aimed at strengthening interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) during the Kimia ke Desa X STEM Playground 2026 programme.

The programme, organised by the Department of Chemistry Malaysia in collaboration with TEGAS, was held at the Kampung Semeba Community Hall and brought together students and members of surrounding communities for a day of learning through interactive activities.

The event was officiated by ChM Pn. Marhayani bt Md Saad, Director-General of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia.

The programme provides an opportunity for students to engage with STEM concepts outside the conventional classroom setting.

Activities that combine education with hands-on participation can help make technical and scientific subjects more accessible to younger audiences while encouraging curiosity and practical learning.

The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) was among the organisations participating in the programme, using the event to introduce visitors to Sarawak’s biodiversity and the importance of conservation.

SBC’s presence also gives students and other visitors an opportunity to learn about the state’s natural environment and the need to protect its biological resources.

Biodiversity education is particularly relevant in Sarawak, where awareness of the diversity of plants, animals and other living organisms forms part of broader efforts to encourage conservation.

At its exhibition booth, SBC is sharing information about Sarawak’s biodiversity while providing visitors with opportunities to explore the subject through educational activities.

The centre is also conducting chemistry-themed games and activities as part of its engagement with participants. The activities are designed to provide an informal setting where students can explore scientific ideas while interacting with representatives from the organisation.

SBC is scheduled to operate its programme booth from 9am to 5pm during the event, allowing students, teachers and members of the surrounding communities to visit throughout the day’s activities.

The participation of organisations from different areas of science and education also reflects the broad scope of STEM learning.

While chemistry provides a foundation for understanding matter and its interactions, biodiversity and conservation introduce students to biological systems and the relationship between scientific knowledge and the natural environment.

For students, such programmes can provide exposure to areas of science that may not always be covered through routine classroom lessons.

Direct interaction with educators and participating organisations can also give young people a clearer understanding of how scientific knowledge is applied beyond school.

Community-based programmes such as the event at Kampung Semeba can additionally bring educational activities closer to students in their own communities.

This approach allows schools and families to participate in learning activities without relying solely on formal classroom settings.

The Kimia ke Desa X STEM Playground 2026 therefore combines science-focused engagement with community participation, bringing students together with organisations involved in chemistry, STEM education and biodiversity awareness.
