KUCHING – Ten young members of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Child Council have departed for Chengdu, China, to participate in the Panda Chengdu – Chinese Education Study Camp from 14 to 20 July 2025. The week-long programme aims to deepen cross-cultural understanding and nurture future leaders through immersive educational experiences.
According to a statement from MBKS, the student delegation is accompanied by two senior MBKS officers who will represent the council in this international educational and cultural exchange programme.
A brief send-off ceremony was held at MBKS headquarters, where MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng officially presented the Sarawak flag to the delegation. Councillors Albert Tay and Judy Kho were also present to offer their support and best wishes to the young ambassadors.
The opportunity arose following a diplomatic courtesy call from officials of the Xindu District, Chengdu, on 29 April 2025. During the meeting, Mayor Wee expressed interest in sending MBKS Child Council representatives to Chengdu and formally requested 10 participation slots. The proposal was positively received, and the invitation was extended with support from the Sichuan Provincial Government.
In his remarks to the departing students, Dato Wee urged them to embrace the study camp as more than just a learning trip. “This is a platform to foster cross-cultural understanding, build international friendships, and grow your confidence and leadership,” he said. “It aligns with our Child-Friendly Cities Initiatives and our commitment to nurturing socially responsible and globally aware youth.”
The Panda Chengdu – Chinese Education Study Camp offers a hands-on experience in Chinese language, culture, and educational practices. Participants will also engage with peers from other cities and countries, expanding their perspectives on global youth collaboration.
MBKS highlighted that the Child Council is a key element of its inclusive governance approach, empowering young voices and offering leadership opportunities. This overseas study experience marks a major milestone in broadening the Child Council’s exposure beyond Sarawak and Malaysia.
“This initiative reaffirms our commitment to developing the next generation of leaders through international exposure, cultural exchange, and community engagement,” the statement added.
