KUCHING – Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is strengthening coordination between government agencies and industry representatives to address infrastructure, water supply and environmental management issues at Sama Jaya Industrial Park.

MBKS Mayor Wee Hong Seng said the matters were discussed at a recent meeting of the Sama Jaya Industrial Park Management Committee (IPMC), which he chaired at the council’s premises.

The meeting brought together representatives from relevant agencies and the industrial sector to review operational concerns and improve coordination.

Sama Jaya Industrial Park plays a role in attracting investment to Sarawak and providing employment opportunities.

Ensuring that businesses have reliable infrastructure and access to essential services remains important to supporting their operations and potential expansion.

Wee said effective follow-up was necessary to ensure that issues raised by companies were addressed systematically.

He highlighted the need to identify the agency responsible for each matter, establish a timeframe for action and clarify the next steps.

Such an approach would allow committee members to monitor progress and give businesses a clearer understanding of how operational concerns were being handled.

It would also help companies plan their activities with greater certainty when dealing with infrastructure or service-related issues.

Water supply was among the key topics discussed during the meeting. Sarawak Water briefed members on supply capacity, water pressure and quality, arrangements for managing disruptions, and anticipated future demand from the industrial park.

Reliable water services are important for industrial operations, making supply planning and contingency arrangements relevant to both existing businesses and future development.

Discussions on these matters provide an opportunity for the relevant parties to identify concerns and coordinate responses where necessary.

Environmental management was another area of focus. The Department of Environment provided updates on effluent monitoring, wastewater discharge, emissions and waste disposal, covering issues associated with industrial activities and regulatory oversight.

Monitoring these areas is important to ensuring that industrial operations are managed in accordance with applicable environmental requirements.

Effective coordination between agencies and companies can also help identify potential problems early and support appropriate action to protect surrounding communities and the environment.

MBKS and the Sama Jaya Industrial Park Association (SECA) are continuing to work together to identify industry concerns and coordinate responses.

The collaboration is intended to improve communication between businesses and the agencies responsible for addressing different operational matters.

The committee also uses a WhatsApp group to maintain communication between formal meetings. The channel provides a means for members to raise issues, exchange updates and follow up on matters that may require attention before the next scheduled discussion.

Wee said the responsibilities of the agencies and industry representatives differed, but their efforts needed to complement one another.

Regular communication, he added, could help members identify emerging concerns earlier and work towards practical solutions.

The coordination effort also supports the objectives of the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which sets out Sarawak’s broader development direction.

In the context of Sama Jaya, the approach links industrial growth and investment with employment opportunities, infrastructure provision and environmental protection.

Wee thanked SECA vice-president Kho Hui Hui, Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) deputy permanent secretary Lo Sheau Sia, and the agency and industry representatives who attended the meeting.

He said MBKS would continue to address matters falling within the council’s responsibilities while coordinating with other agencies on issues requiring their involvement.
