KLANG – Sarawak teenager Mia Ghazali has added another chapter to her family’s record in muay thai after winning gold in the women’s 45 kg category at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXII Selangor 2026.
The 15-year-old, whose full name is Emylia Lynn Ghazali Zulfikar, secured the title after edging Johor’s Damia Husna Azian 34-33 in a closely contested final at KSL Esplanade Mall today.
Mia’s victory provided Sarawak with its only muay thai gold medal at this year’s Games. The state team finished the competition with one gold and three bronze medals, placing fifth in the overall muay thai standings.
The result also marked Mia’s first gold medal at the SUKMA level and continued a notable family tradition in the sport.
Her three older brothers – Elias Ghazali Zulfikar, Muhammad Johan Ghazali Zulfikar, better known as Jojo, and Muhammad Mikail Ghazali Zulfikar, known as Miki – had also won SUKMA gold medals at the previous edition of the Games.
Mia’s final against Damia was competitive from the opening rounds. She established an advantage by taking the points in the first two rounds, but the Johor fighter responded strongly in the third.
Encouraged by vocal support from the Johor supporters, Damia increased the pressure and mounted a sustained attack in the final round. Mia held on to her narrow advantage, however, securing the bout by a single point.
Reflecting on the victory, Mia said she had spent about two months preparing for the competition, with particular attention given to improving her technique.
“I trained for about two months to improve my technique. I was very focused on training and it was worth it,” she said after the fight.
“I am very happy and satisfied with this result.”
Mia also credited her family for helping her maintain her confidence during the bout. She said the presence of her three older brothers provided important encouragement as she competed on the SUKMA stage for the first time.
Support from Sarawak supporters at the venue also played a role in helping her maintain her composure and performance during the closely fought contest.
Looking ahead, Mia said she hoped to build on the achievement and eventually follow the path taken by one of her brothers by competing in Thailand.
She also thanked her coach and those who had supported her throughout her preparation and participation in the Games.
The medals were presented by Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Mia’s victory gives the Sarawak muay thai contingent a strong finish to its SUKMA campaign, while extending the Ghazali family’s association with success in the sport at Malaysia’s premier multi-sport event.
