PUSA – The Sarawak Government has committed RM13 million towards the development of the pineapple industry in Beting Maro, recognising its strong potential to contribute to the region’s economic growth and agro-based innovation.
Beting Maro State Assemblyman (ADUN), Razaili Gapor, announced the allocation during the inauguration of a Pineapple-Based Non-Food Products Processing Course held at Al-Amin Hall, Beladin, on Monday. The course was jointly organised by the Beting Maro Service Centre and the Malaysian Pineapple Industrial Board (LPNM).
According to Razaili, the substantial allocation will be used to enhance the support infrastructure for the pineapple sector. This includes the construction of a dedicated processing centre and the development of an “Entrepreneurs’ Porch” to showcase agriculture-based products like pineapple, coconut, and sugar apong.
“This RM13 million will be used not only to improve facilities but also to open up economic opportunities for agro-entrepreneurs,” he said. “Pineapple is more than just a fruit. It holds promise in both food and non-food product development.”
Razaili highlighted the untapped potential of pineapple by-products, particularly the leaves, which can be transformed into thread and other value-added products. He stressed that empowering entrepreneurs with knowledge about all parts of the pineapple plant—from seeds and cultivation techniques to harvesting and yield management—is crucial for building a sustainable industry.
He added that a well-developed value chain would ensure that the industry continues to flourish, providing benefits beyond farming, including manufacturing, innovation, and rural employment.
The event was attended by aspiring agropreneurs, government officials, and community members who are keen to engage in pineapple-based economic activities. The move is in line with the Sarawak government’s broader goal to enhance rural industries and promote agricultural innovation across the state.
