KUCHING – Sarawak is strengthening coordination among 22 organising committees responsible for the Sarawak Cluster of the 34th SEA Games in 2027, with officials reviewing responsibilities, implementation schedules and operational requirements ahead of the regional sporting event.
Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation) and Sarawak Cluster Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Datu Hii Chang Kee said effective cooperation between the committees would be essential to managing the various requirements involved in hosting the Games.
Speaking at the SEA Games 2027 Working Committee Coordination Workshop in Kuching on Friday, Hii said each committee needed a clear understanding of its responsibilities and how its work connected with that of other teams.
He said the committees should identify overlapping duties, tasks that had yet to be assigned and areas where additional support was needed. Addressing these matters during the planning stage would help reduce coordination gaps and clarify accountability as preparations progressed.
The workshop, held from 23 to 25 October, provides a platform for the committees to review their respective terms of reference, refine implementation plans and establish clearer arrangements for carrying out assigned duties.
Hii said each responsibility should have a designated person or team in charge, a defined deadline and appropriate follow-up measures. The process is intended to help the committees coordinate their work and identify outstanding matters that require further decisions.
Sarawak’s responsibilities for the Games include organising the opening ceremony and managing 18 of the 43 sports scheduled to be held across the event. These duties involve several operational areas that must be planned together to support the delivery of competitions.
Among the requirements are suitable sporting venues, transportation arrangements, accommodation, security services, medical support and digital systems. Coordination across these areas will be important to ensure that athletes, officials and other participants can access the facilities and services required during the Games.
The range of responsibilities also means that planning for individual sports cannot be treated entirely in isolation. Venue readiness, transport schedules, accommodation capacity and emergency support arrangements will need to be considered alongside competition requirements as preparations continue.
The estimated investment associated with hosting the 2027 SEA Games is approximately RM500 million, according to the information provided for the workshop. The amount includes upgrading stadiums and sports facilities to meet the requirements of the event.
Infrastructure preparation forms one part of the wider organisational effort, alongside operational planning and coordination between the committees. Facility upgrades will need to be considered in relation to the needs of the sports assigned to Sarawak, while other workstreams cover services and arrangements required for the event.
The coordination workshop also allows officials to identify issues that cannot be resolved at committee level and may require consultation with the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC). Such discussions are intended to clarify outstanding requirements and support decisions involving different organising bodies.
The 34th SEA Games in 2027 will bring together athletes from 11 Southeast Asian nations, placing demands on organisers across competition management, logistics and supporting services. Sarawak’s preparations form part of the wider national effort to stage the regional multi-sport event.
With planning covering 22 committees, 18 sports and multiple supporting functions, the workshop’s focus is on establishing clear responsibilities and aligning implementation schedules before the Games begin.
The committees are expected to use the coordination process to address unresolved tasks, improve cooperation and maintain progress across their respective areas of responsibility. â Sarawak Daily
