SIBU – The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has successfully completed and handed over the first phase of a pilot school redevelopment project at SMK Agama Sibu. The official handover ceremony took place on 15 September 2026, marking a significant milestone in the state’s educational infrastructure upgrade.
The Divisional Engineer of JKR Sibu, Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Chieng Siong Ming, officiated the event. He formally transferred the newly redeveloped facilities to the Sarawak State Education Department and the school administration.
This pilot initiative represents a broader strategic effort to address and redevelop dilapidated educational facilities across Sarawak. The project scope was comprehensive, encompassing the construction of a new dining hall block and an MSB House block.
In addition to the new structures, the project involved extensive demolition works, foundational piling, and comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrades. External works were also completed to ensure a cohesive and functional campus environment.
The symbolic handover was received by Puan Hajah Masnah binti Abang Abu Bakar, the Senior Principal Assistant Director of the Infrastructure and Procurement Sector at the Sarawak State Education Department. She was joined by Ustazah Rosnah binti Mahamud, the Principal of SMK Agama Sibu.
The ceremony underscored the collaborative nature of state-level educational development. It was witnessed by several key stakeholders, including Encik Mohd Zahreen bin Mohd Zailani, Principal Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
Local administrative representation was also prominent, with Encik Lau Ngie Tung, the Sibu District Education Officer, in attendance. Officials from the Implementation Coordination Unit, the Sarawak State Development Office, and the Sibu District Education Office were also present to mark the occasion.
The official transfer signifies that the facilities are now ready for immediate use by the school community. However, the project remains under a Defects Liability Period, which is scheduled to extend until 10 May 2027 to ensure any post-completion issues are promptly addressed.
The successful delivery of this pilot project highlights the ongoing commitment of JKR Sarawak to high-quality infrastructure implementation. Upgrading educational facilities is a critical component in providing safer, more comfortable, and conducive learning environments for students and staff.
Dilapidated school buildings have long been a challenge in various parts of the state, often hindering the quality of education. Targeted redevelopment projects like this one aim to systematically eliminate such deficits, ensuring that all students have access to modern educational amenities.
