KUCHING – Drainage reconstruction works are underway at SMK Jalan Arang as part of efforts to improve water drainage conditions and provide a safer environment for students, teachers and the wider school community.

Assemblyman for N13 Batu Kitang (caretaker) Lo Khere Chiang visited the school to inspect the ongoing works and review the progress of the reconstruction project.

The visit provided an opportunity to assess the work being carried out and observe the improvements intended to address drainage conditions within the school compound.

Proper drainage infrastructure is an important part of maintaining a safe and functional school environment. An effective system helps manage rainwater runoff, reduce water accumulation and minimise potential disruption to daily school activities during periods of heavy rainfall.

For schools, inadequate drainage can create difficulties for students and staff, particularly when water collects around walkways, access routes and other frequently used areas. Persistent water accumulation may also affect the condition of outdoor facilities and increase maintenance requirements.

The reconstruction at SMK Jalan Arang is therefore aimed at improving the school’s drainage infrastructure and supporting a more suitable environment for teaching and learning.

Lo said the improvements were important for the safety and comfort of students, teachers and everyone using the school facilities. He expressed hope that the completed works would provide better drainage conditions for the school community.

The project also highlights the importance of maintaining school infrastructure alongside other educational facilities. Drainage systems, although often less visible than classrooms and other buildings, play an important role in ensuring that school premises remain accessible and functional throughout the year.

In Sarawak, rainfall and seasonal wet weather make effective water management an important consideration for public infrastructure, including educational institutions. Well-maintained drainage channels can help direct surface water away from school grounds and reduce the likelihood of water-related disruptions.

The effectiveness of the reconstruction will ultimately depend on the quality of the completed works, the suitability of the drainage design and regular maintenance after the project is finished.

The school community is expected to benefit from improved drainage conditions once the reconstruction is completed. Better water flow could also help protect surrounding facilities and reduce problems associated with prolonged water accumulation.

No details were provided on the project’s total cost, construction timeline or expected completion date.

The ongoing works form part of efforts to improve the physical environment at SMK Jalan Arang, with the broader objective of ensuring that students and school personnel can carry out their daily activities in a safer and more comfortable setting. — Sarawak Daily
