KUCHING (Jan 20): Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has said he is not bothered by false claims made against him by a Facebook user. He assured the public that these accusations would not stop him from doing his best for the people of Kuching.

At the launch of the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Caring Community Programme, Mayor Wee highlighted a Facebook page called “Oki Wee Maa,” which posted his personal photos. He called the actions unnecessary and advised the page owner to focus on more positive efforts.

“This is not an election period. Use your energy to help the people instead of treating me as an imaginary enemy,” he said, holding a printout of the page.

The mayor added that he is ready to step down when his term ends in March and encouraged anyone who wants to become the next mayor to show sincerity and work hard for the people.

Wee noted that during the 2021 state election, social media attacks were expected as part of the campaign. However, making baseless accusations outside of elections is unnecessary and unhelpful.

He urged people to use social media responsibly by sharing accurate and useful information rather than spreading false claims. Wee also emphasized his commitment to continue working harder for the community, despite the criticism.

“If you think attacking me will slow me down, you’re wrong. I will work even harder, and you won’t be able to keep up with my pace,” he said.

In the 2021 state election, Wee ran as the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) candidate in Padungan but lost to Democratic Action Party’s Chong Chieng Jen in a four-cornered contest.
