KUCHING: The South Kuching City Council (MBKS) has pledged immediate action following a minor collapse of a nearly 100-year-old wooden building located in the heart of Kuching city. In response to the incident, South Kuching Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng emphasized that these buildings are not only old structures but integral to the identity and heritage of Kuching. “We appreciate the swift response of emergency teams, including BOMBA, SESCO, JKR, and the Royal Malaysian Police, who worked together to ensure the situation was handled quickly,” he said. The SESCO team arrived at the site in under 15 minutes to disconnect the electricity, with over 10 personnel working to secure the area.

Dato Wee highlighted the importance of a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. He assured the public that authorities such as the Department of Public Works (JKR) and the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) would be involved in the investigation process. “This is a time for unity in ensuring public safety and the preservation of our heritage. It is not the time for politics or placing blame. We must allow experts to carry out their investigations,” he stated.

As a short-term measure, MBKS will collaborate with technical experts to assess the safety of other heritage buildings within the city. The council is also drafting long-term strategies to balance heritage preservation with public safety. These include forming a structural audit board, creating local maintenance regulations, and providing assistance to building owners for rehabilitation efforts.

“We urge all building owners to report any signs of damage or potential hazards immediately. Protecting the lives and heritage of our city is a collective responsibility,” the Mayor urged. MBKS is committed to working closely with the state government and relevant agencies to find sustainable and effective solutions for the people of Kuching. — UKAS EDITION
