KUCHING, March 1: Muslims in Malaysia will officially begin their fasting for the holy month of Ramadan on Sunday, March 2, 2025. This was announced by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, last night.
The announcement, which is an important moment for all Malaysian Muslims, was made live on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). This yearly tradition follows the official Islamic procedure where the date for the start of fasting is set with the consent of the Rulers of Malaysia, after the advice of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia.

According to the official statement from the Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, the decision was made based on the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon on February 28, 2025, which was the 29th day of the Islamic month of Sha’ban 1446 Hijri.

The moon sighting took place at 29 key locations across Malaysia, including several important observation points in Sarawak such as the Miri Astronomy Center, Teluk Bandung in Kuching, and the Bintulu Astronomy Center.
This announcement marks the start of a spiritual journey for Muslims across the country. Ramadan is the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, where Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, focusing on prayer, charity, and reflection. It is also a time when families gather for sahur (pre-dawn meal) and iftar (breaking fast), strengthening their bonds and religious devotion.
In Malaysia, Ramadan is not just about fasting — it is also a month filled with religious events, Ramadan bazaars, prayers at mosques, and community activities that bring people closer.
The official announcement from the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal is important for ensuring that all states across Malaysia begin fasting together in unity. This tradition reflects the strong Islamic governance in the country and the respect for religious customs that bind the Malaysian Muslim community.
As the first terawih prayers take place on the night of March 1, Muslims across the country will prepare themselves spiritually and mentally for the blessed month of Ramadan.
