110 Contingents March in Grand Parade for Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s 79th Birthday

110 Contingents March in Grand Parade for Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s 79th Birthday

KUCHING – In a vibrant display of state pride, Padang Merdeka was animated on Saturday as 110 contingents representing government departments, statutory agencies, corporate bodies, NGOs and uniformed services took part in a parade and mass gathering to commemorate the 79th birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The ceremony commenced with the inspection of a Royal Guard, followed by a helicopter flypast and a traditional 17-gun salute, signalling the official start of the festivities.

Tun Wan Junaidi was escorted in by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Openg, receiving the formal guard of honour.

Thousands of spectators, including the marchers themselves, lined Padang Merdeka to witness the pomp.

The national anthem, Negaraku, and Sarawak’s state anthem, Ibu Pertiwiku, were performed before the ceremonial cake‐cutting, conducted by Tun Wan Junaidi amid chants of “Dirgahayu” echoing across the field.

According to media reports, approximately 10,000 participants were involved in the parade, which also featured performances by school bands, cultural troupes, and ceremonial units.

Prizes and trophies were awarded to contingents judged on discipline, creativity and presentation across various categories, including departments, statutory bodies, and divisions.

The event underlines the people of Sarawak’s respect and appreciation for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s service, while also serving as a symbol of unity and pride under his leadership.

Beyond the parade, the birthday celebrations included Thanksgiving ceremonies, an investiture ceremony, a state banquet, and a Konsert Rakyat in the evening to conclude the programme.
