16-Year-Old Driver Linked to Tragic Stutong Crash Claims Fifth Victim

KUCHING, Jan 14 – A devastating accident at Jalan Teo Kui Seng in Stutong Baru has claimed five lives, with a 16-year-old boy identified as the driver responsible for the tragedy.

Kuching district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah reported that the crash occurred around 12.50pm and involved three cars and two motorcycles.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the car, driven by the teenager, was heading from Airport Road towards Jalan Setia Raja when the driver lost control and veered into the opposite lane. The car collided with two motorcycles and two oncoming cars,” said ACP Mohd Farhan.

Four victims—three men and a woman aged between 16 and 45—lost their lives at the scene. A fifth victim, aged 16, succumbed to injuries later while receiving treatment in the Red Zone of the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Three additional victims are currently being treated for injuries at the hospital’s emergency unit.

The teenage driver suffered a neck injury and remains under medical care. Authorities have confirmed that he will be detained upon recovery to assist in the investigation.

The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. If convicted, the penalty includes imprisonment of five to ten years and a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000.
