3 Friends of Jalan Stephen Yong Shooting Victim Freed on Bail

KUCHING, 1 May — Three men arrested in connection with the fatal shooting incident at Jalan Stephen Yong, Batu Kawa, on 26 April have been released on bail today after their remand period expired.

The three individuals, all friends of the deceased, were among the six men initially detained by the police to assist in the investigation. The tragic incident took place around 5am, shocking the local community.

The remaining three suspects — who were reportedly in the same car as the alleged shooter during the incident — remain in police custody and are expected to be held until this coming Sunday.

On 28 April, Kuching High Court Senior Assistant Registrar Heng Yi Min approved the remand application for all six suspects, aged between 26 and 45, to allow investigations to proceed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which pertains to murder.

The case first came to light at around 5.30am on 26 April, when police officers at Batu Kawa Police Station were approached by two men in a Perodua Myvi. They were carrying an unconscious man, claiming their friend had been shot while passing through Jalan Stephen Yong.

A medical examination confirmed the victim was shot twice — once in the head and once in the right arm. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Following swift police action, six suspects were arrested, including one individual who is a police officer from Bukit Aman and was reportedly on holiday at the time. Authorities also seized a vehicle and a pistol loaded with 10 bullets as part of the ongoing investigation.

Kuching police continue to investigate the case, and the public is urged not to speculate as details are still emerging.
