SIMUNJAN – Thirty single mothers and low-income recipients in Simunjan received food basket donations during a welfare programme held at Surau Taman Hijrah on Tuesday.
The initiative was officiated by Simunjan State Assemblyman (ADUN) Awla Dris, who personally assisted in handing over the donations.
The programme was organised by the Sarawak Single Mothers Association (PITSA), Simunjan District Branch, with the aim of easing the burden of families as they prepare for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Each food basket contained essential items such as rice, sugar, and other basic food supplies, along with festive treats including cakes and Raya biscuits.
Organisers highlighted that the donations were intended to provide some relief for households struggling with daily expenses, particularly during the festive season.
Speaking at the event, Awla commended the association’s efforts, describing the initiative as a meaningful contribution to community welfare.
“Although this donation cannot fully cover daily needs, it is hoped that it can somewhat reduce the burden of the recipients in preparing for Aidilfitri,” he said.
He further encouraged similar programmes to be held regularly, noting that such efforts not only provide material support but also foster a culture of sharing and compassion within the community.
According to him, welfare initiatives like this strengthen social bonds and create a direct impact on those most in need.
Community leaders have pointed out that single mothers often face unique challenges in managing household responsibilities with limited resources.
Programmes like PITSA’s food basket distribution are seen as vital in ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind, especially during festive periods when financial pressures tend to increase.
Awla also emphasised the broader role of welfare programmes in promoting unity and resilience among residents.
He noted that collective participation from local organisations, government agencies, and community members is essential to sustain such initiatives.
The event concluded with recipients expressing gratitude for the support, which they said would help them prepare for Hari Raya with greater ease.
Organisers reiterated their commitment to continue similar efforts in the future, reinforcing the importance of community-driven welfare programmes in Simunjan.
