445 Conquer Mount Sadung at 6th Bung Sadung Climbathon

SERIAN — A record 445 individuals from both Malaysia and abroad participated in the sixth Bung Sadung Climbathon Trail Challenge 2025, held at Kampung Bunga, Serian on August 24.

This marks a significant increase from previous editions, reflecting a rising community interest in sports and eco-recreation.

Organised through a collaboration between the Serian District Council (MDS) and Kampung Bunga’s Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).

The event challenged climbers to ascend Mount Sadung roughly 728 m to 753 m above sea level via a rugged 7-kilometre forest trail. A more leisurely 3 km “Fun Hike” category welcomed participants of all ages.

The event also featured an attractive total prize fund of RM20,500, along with medals and trophies for top performers, underlining both its competitive nature and community focus.

In his opening remarks, Sarawak’s Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn also the Tarat assemblyman emphasised the climb’s role in fostering resilience, optimism, and discipline among youth.

He added that the challenge not only inspires personal growth but also promotes local bonds and wellness.

The setup of stalls featuring village produce and local products further supported residents’ livelihoods and positioned Serian as a budding ecotourism hub.

Winners across categories reflected regional diversity:

  • Open Men: Arikchely Ariyl Arikah (Sabah)
  • Open Women: Lim Siet Fah (Sarawak)
  • Junior Boys: Fedderick Awal Saga (Sarawak)
  • Junior Girls: Sharifah Rizqah Humaira Wan Hossin
    Additional category champions included:
  • Runner-Up Open Men: Samson Karega (Kenya)
  • Veteran Women: Joyce Ho Hie Knew
  • Senior Men: Jasuel Lukim (Sarawak)

This iteration builds on the climbathon’s growing legacy as both a competitive event and a community-driven celebration of fitness and culture, evidenced by its increasing turnout and inclusive structure.
