KUCHING – More than 4,600 students in Sarawak have benefited from the Free Higher Education Scheme (FTES) as of 31 March, according to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development.
Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee revealed during the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting that a total of 4,694 students are currently enjoying the scheme across several institutions.
Of this number, 543 are enrolled at Curtin University Malaysia, while 172 are studying at i-CATS University College.
The largest share of beneficiaries is at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, with 1,959 students, followed closely by 2,020 students at the University of Technology, Sarawak.
“This number will definitely increase when enrolment in June and September, where we will target 10,000 students throughout Sarawak will enjoy free education starting this year,” Dr Annuar said in response to a question from Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad.
He added that 64 courses have been offered under FTES so far, with the possibility of expanding the list based on industry needs in Sarawak.
The scheme is designed to reduce the financial burden on families while ensuring that students have access to quality higher education.
The Deputy Minister emphasised that the initiative is part of the state government’s broader strategy to nurture talent and strengthen Sarawak’s human capital.
By offering free education, the government aims to encourage more students to pursue tertiary studies and contribute to the state’s economic and social development.
As of February 2026, a total of 39,839 Sarawak students are pursuing their studies at Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) across Malaysia.
The FTES scheme is expected to complement these efforts by providing additional opportunities for local students to access higher education without financial constraints.
The government’s target of reaching 10,000 students by the end of the year reflects its commitment to expanding educational access and ensuring that Sarawak’s youth are equipped with the skills needed for future industries.
