50 Ramadan Baskets Bring Relief to Samarahan Families

SAMARAHAN – The Sarawak JKR Islamic Welfare Association (PKIJ) Samarahan Branch successfully implemented its 2026 Ramadan Basket Programme, distributing essential household items to families and individuals in need in Samarahan.

The initiative, carried out in late February and early March, was supported through contributions from staff of the Samarahan Division Public Works Department as well as donations from external contributors.

A total of 50 Ramadan baskets were prepared, each valued at RM100, bringing the total donation value to RM5,000.

The baskets contained basic daily necessities intended to ease the financial burden of recipients during the fasting month, while also promoting generosity and compassion within the community.

The departure ceremony for the Ramadan Basket Squad was officiated by Ir. Ts. Mahathir bin Jokeni, Divisional Engineer of JKR Samarahan Division.

After the ceremony, volunteers proceeded with the distribution of the baskets to selected beneficiaries throughout Samarahan.

Distribution was conducted in stages. On 26 February, eight baskets were presented to current and former staff of JKR Samarahan.

On 3 March, 20 baskets were delivered to asnaf families in Kampung Niup and Kampung Tanjung Bundong. The final phase took place on 4 March, when 22 baskets were distributed to new community members in Kampung Pelaie.

The programme aimed not only to provide financial and material support but also to strengthen social relationships within the community.

By involving staff members, retirees, and village residents, PKIJ Samarahan sought to promote solidarity and caring values that are especially significant during Ramadan.

Community leaders praised the initiative, stating that programmes like this help cultivate a culture of mutual assistance and social responsibility.

Although modest in monetary value, the baskets symbolise collective community effort to ensure no one is left behind during the holy month.

PKIJ Samarahan expressed appreciation to all donors and volunteers who contributed to the success of the programme.

The association emphasised that the initiative reflects its broader mission of promoting welfare, strengthening community relationships, and upholding values of compassion and unity.

As Ramadan continues, the distribution of aid such as these baskets remains an important effort in supporting communities across Sarawak.

For recipients, the assistance helps reduce financial pressure while also bringing hope and joy as they prepare for Syawal.
