KUCHING – A total of 500 Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak officers will be deployed during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026 festive season to ensure road safety across the state.
The initiative, known as Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026, will run nationwide from 13 to 29 March 2026. The operation combines advocacy campaigns with strict enforcement against traffic offenders, aiming to safeguard road users during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
The programme was officially launched at Kuching Sentral Terminal by Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Hasbi Habibollah on Friday. He emphasised that JPJ would not compromise on violations that endanger lives, stressing that enforcement is essential to reduce accidents and fatalities.
As part of the operation, JPJ Sarawak will conduct bus inspections at the state’s three main terminals in Kuching, Sibu, and Miri. These checks include technical assessments of vehicles, driver background reviews, traffic offence record verification, and initial urine screening to ensure drivers are not under the influence of drugs before beginning their journeys.
In addition, a ban on heavy vehicle movement will be enforced on 19–20 March and 28–29 March, covering two days before and after Aidilfitri. The restriction is intended to ease traffic congestion and minimise accident risks during peak travel times.
The operation also involves collaboration with several strategic agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), and the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK). This multi-agency approach is designed to strengthen enforcement and ensure comprehensive coverage across the state.
Speaking at a press conference, Datuk Hasbi Habibollah highlighted that the government’s long-term goal is to reduce road accident fatalities by 50 percent by 2030. He expressed hope that sustained efforts such as Ops Aidilfitri would contribute significantly towards achieving this target.
Also present at the launch were Sarawak Deputy Minister of Transport (Air and Road) Datuk Dr Jerip Susil and Sarawak JPJ Director Norizan Jili, who reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring safe travel during the festive season.
With thousands expected to travel across Sarawak for Aidilfitri, the operation underscores the government’s determination to prioritise safety and protect lives on the road.
