SARIKEI: In a significant step towards the development of infrastructure in rural Sarawak, 51 landowners have received compensation cheques totalling RM644,995.60 from the Sarawak Government. This compensation is part of the land acquisition process for the Muara Payang SK Road Project in Kampung Bugis, Bukit Huang, and Skim Muara Payang, Sarikei.
The road project, which spans 7 kilometres, will involve 91 plots of land across a vast 32.7199 hectares (approximately 80.85 acres). The project is part of a broader initiative under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), aimed at improving infrastructure and connectivity in the region. The total cost of the project is estimated at RM45 million, with plans for it to be implemented through the Sarawak Irrigation and Drainage Department.

The cheque handover ceremony, held on Monday at the Sarawak State Administration Building in Sarikei, was officiated by Datuk Len Talif Salleh, the Deputy Minister of Town Planning, Land Administration, and Environment, as well as the Kuala Rajang State Assemblyman. In his speech, Datuk Len emphasized the government’s commitment to rural development, particularly in enhancing infrastructure and providing utilities for rural communities to improve their quality of life and economic activities.

“The development of basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and water is essential to connect rural areas to urban economic centres,” said Datuk Len. “We aim to ensure rural residents can benefit from development, just like those living in cities.”
The Muara Payang SK Road Project is a crucial part of this initiative, helping to enhance transportation and connectivity. Additionally, a new ferry route, valued at RM24 million, will be constructed to provide direct access to Sarikei Town from the Tanah Putih area, bypassing the river.
Datuk Len also highlighted the potential benefits the road project will bring to the local agricultural sector. Parit Bugis and Bukit Huang, once known for their agricultural products like pineapples and vegetables, have suffered from saltwater flooding due to the lack of proper infrastructure. The new road will help block the saltwater ingress, making the land suitable again for commercial agriculture. The Agriculture Department has already identified areas that could be developed into Agro Parks, further boosting the local economy.
The road project is expected to provide significant benefits not just in terms of infrastructure but also in revitalizing the agricultural sector, creating more opportunities for the local community.
Also present at the ceremony were the Sarikei Division Land Manager, Surveyor Sr. Awan Amal, Department Heads, Tribal and Community Heads, as well as the cheque recipients.
With these developments, the Sarawak Government continues to prioritize rural growth, ensuring that all residents, whether in urban or rural areas, enjoy the fruits of development. — UKAS EDITION
