KUCHING: Sarawak and Australia have taken a bold step forward in the power sector through a newly signed cooperation agreement focusing on energy storage. This agreement aims to strengthen Sarawak’s energy capacity to meet future demands, while also encouraging more Australian investors to explore business opportunities in the state.
Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, announced the collaboration during a media session after paying a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Monday.
Heinecke expressed optimism about the partnership, saying that this cooperation will play an important role in ensuring Sarawak has a stable and reliable energy supply in the future. “We recently signed a cooperation agreement on energy storage to help Sarawak meet its future needs,” she said.
Apart from energy storage, Australia is also keen to attract more investors to Sarawak. Heinecke mentioned that several Australian companies are already considering Sarawak as a preferred location to invest, especially in the power and mining industries.
The High Commissioner also highlighted that Sarawak’s strong focus on renewable energy and its commitment to green technology make it an attractive destination for international investors, including from Australia.
This cooperation is expected to open up new doors for knowledge sharing, technology exchange, and investment flow between Sarawak and Australia, benefiting both regions economically and environmentally.
During the visit, Heinecke was accompanied by several key officials, including Sarawak Government Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia Fenny Nuli, and Sarawak Energy Group CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.
With Sarawak’s rapid growth and push towards green energy, this collaboration marks a positive step towards a more sustainable and innovative energy future for the state. – UKAS
