Fire Breaks Out at UNIMAS Rafflesia College, No Injuries Reported

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A fire broke out at the Rafflesia College of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) this evening, affecting the ceiling on the fourth floor. Fortunately, no injuries or loss of life were reported as firefighters swiftly brought the situation under control.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 4.52 pm, prompting a team from the Kota Samarahan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to rush to the scene. The firefighting operation was led by PBK I (TBBK II) Justin Basik.

According to the fire department, the fire engulfed approximately 50 percent of the ceiling area in two unoccupied student residential flats. Firefighters acted quickly, using a 400-foot hose line with two nozzles and drawing water from a nearby fire hydrant to extinguish the flames.

After ensuring the area was safe and that no further sources of fire remained, the operation was concluded, and the personnel returned to their station. Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.

The incident has raised concerns among students and university staff regarding fire safety at the institution. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough review to prevent similar incidents in the future.

UNIMAS has yet to release an official statement on the incident, but students and staff are advised to remain cautious and follow fire safety protocols.
