Kuching, Sarawak – Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr. Sim Kui Hian, recently visited the ongoing redevelopment of St. Mark’s Church in Batu Kawa to ensure the project is progressing smoothly. The redevelopment is part of a larger effort to cater to the growing population and urban development in Batu Kawa, with a multi-phase RM20 million project that began in March 2024.
Thanks to the dedication of Father Felix and the Church committee, significant strides have been made in the church’s redevelopment, which aims to meet the needs of the ever-growing Batu Kawa community. During his visit, Dr. Sim Kui Hian was briefed on the progress of the various phases of the redevelopment. The Bell Tower is now 99% complete, while the Parish administration block is nearing completion at 70-80%. Additionally, the piling for the new Sunday School block has been finished, and the final phase involves expanding the church to double its current capacity.
Dr. Sim Kui Hian expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the church and the community, emphasizing that the redevelopment is timely, given the rapid urban expansion in Batu Kawa since the church’s establishment in 1999. He also highlighted the importance of continuing to support the fundraising efforts to ensure the successful completion of the redevelopment.
UNIFOR Sarawak has also pledged to contribute to the church’s transformation, demonstrating strong community support. The fundraising target for the project remains crucial, and local contributions will help meet the pre-COVID-19 estimate of RM20 million.
Batu Kawa has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, moving from a quiet residential area to a vibrant, rapidly developing district. Since 2016, the area has seen an influx of new houses, apartments, and significant infrastructure developments, including the first 24/7 eMart in Kuching, Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, and extensive upgrades to roads, drainage systems, and flood mitigation measures.
Looking ahead, Batu Kawa 2030 promises even more development, including the ART Yellow Line, new shopping centres, four new Batu Kawa bridges, and 70 acres of urban parks. This transformation will make Batu Kawa a prime location for families, young people, and senior citizens alike to live, work, and relax.
