Sarawak Premier Accepts Nomination as PERKIM President for 2025-2028

KUCHING – In a significant moment for both Sarawak and the Malaysian Islamic community, the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has officially accepted the sole nomination for the role of President (Yang Di-Pertua or YDP) of the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM) for the term 2025-2028.

In a heartfelt statement, the Premier expressed his deep sense of humility and gratitude for the trust placed in him by the members of PERKIM. He stated, “With a sense of humility, I accept the nomination as the President of PERKIM for the upcoming period. I am honoured by the support of all PERKIM members and their confidence in my leadership.”

Premier Abang Zohari also took the opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional leadership of the current President, Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who has been at the helm of the organization since 2006. He extended his sincere thanks to Dr. Mahathir for his dedication and services over the years. “I will do my best to continue the noble work started by Tun Dr. Mahathir, particularly the policies set forth by the founding figures of PERKIM, most notably His Royal Highness Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, in promoting the welfare of Muslims in Malaysia,” he said.

Additionally, Premier Abang Zohari expressed his appreciation for the support of Dato’ Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim, the Member of Parliament for Arau, and Dato’ Ustaz Mohd Nakhaei Haji Ahmad, who both withdrew from the race for the President’s post and backed his nomination. Their commitment to unity and the shared goal of strengthening PERKIM’s mission was a crucial part of the smooth transition process.

As the new President of PERKIM, Premier Abang Zohari’s leadership promises to continue PERKIM’s important work in serving the Malaysian Muslim community, with a focus on safeguarding their welfare and upholding the values established by the organization’s founding leaders. – Sarawakku
