BINTULU, 13 May 2025 – A massive fire broke out earlier today at the BGC Construction area in Samalaju, completely destroying three blocks of temporary workers’ housing. The incident, which involved a total of 10 housing units, caused panic among nearby workers but thankfully resulted in no reported injuries.
According to a statement from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre, they received an emergency call at 1.51pm and immediately dispatched a team from the Samalaju Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with intense flames consuming the entire non-permanent housing structure, which measured approximately 195 by 98 square feet. Quick action by the developer helped prevent further disaster as they used an excavator to create a ‘firebreak’, stopping the flames from spreading to nearby blocks.
Firefighters launched a swift extinguishing operation using a 300-foot hose stream, supported by a branch splitter and two water nozzles. Water was drawn from an open source – a nearby pond – to help suppress the blaze. The fire was successfully brought under control by 2.45pm, with follow-up checks conducted to ensure no remaining embers.
The entire operation concluded at 4.19pm, and while the fire caused total destruction of the three blocks, it’s a relief that no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still being investigated by the fire department.
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety, especially in temporary housing areas that are often vulnerable to fast-spreading fires. Authorities are urging all construction developers to review safety protocols to avoid future tragedies.
