KUCHING, 16 May 2025 — A Hyundai hatchback was completely destroyed in a blaze that broke out at a Shell workshop along Jalan Kereta Api last night. The workshop, operated by Syarikat Bayu Timur, witnessed the fire at around 7.25pm, prompting an urgent response from the Fire and Rescue Department.
According to a spokesperson from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Operations Centre, an emergency call was received alerting them of the incident. A team from the Batu Lintang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was immediately dispatched to the scene, led by Operations Commander PBK II Abdul Hakim Supian.
“The fire involved a Hyundai Hatchback and caused 100 per cent damage to the engine compartment,” the spokesperson confirmed.
Before the arrival of the rescue team, workers from the workshop attempted to douse the fire using a fire extinguisher. However, their efforts were unsuccessful as the fire intensified and rapidly spread.
Upon reaching the scene, the Operations Response Team (PKO) took swift action and began firefighting operations using a first aid hose and water from their fire engine.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
This is not the first time a fire has occurred in a vehicle repair setting, raising concerns about fire safety measures in workshops across Kuching. Regular maintenance of fire extinguishers, staff training, and immediate reporting can prevent more severe damage or injuries.
Motorists and workshop operators are reminded to ensure all fire safety protocols are strictly followed to avoid such incidents in the future.
