KUCHING, 26 May – Sarawak has passed six new laws in its latest State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, including key amendments to the Land Code and biodiversity legislation. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg stressed the importance of the DUN’s legislative authority, calling it a vital instrument for protecting Sarawak’s interests and autonomy.
In his speech during the GPS Backbenchers Night Ceremony at the DUN Sarawak’s Hall Santapan, Premier Abang Zohari expressed his gratitude to all assembly members for their support in approving the bills.
“One major amendment is to the Land Code, which now allows the registration of wakaf land and land granted to society or welfare bodies,” he explained.
Sharing his own personal experience, he recalled how entrusted land was once taken back by heirs due to lack of legal protection. This new amendment, he said, ensures that land given on trust can now be legally recognised and registered, preventing future disputes.
“It’s not about religion. It’s about having a better administrative system. With digitalisation, most land transactions now use digital documents,” he added.
Another major law passed is related to biodiversity, which now enables the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) to commercialise research outcomes, especially those related to local resources like algae. This change will allow SBC to hold equity in research-based companies, ensuring Sarawak reaps the benefits of its scientific advancements.
“We don’t want our research to be exploited by outsiders. Now, our findings can bring commercial value to Sarawak,” said the Premier.
Premier Abang Zohari also reminded all DUN members about Article 95C(a) of the Federal Constitution, which grants legislative powers to Sarawak DUN, especially in areas like electricity and gas, a power that has existed since 1963.
“This is our right. The GDO (Gas Distribution Ordinance), for instance, cannot be disputed. Our legislative power must not be compromised,” he emphasised. – Sarawakku
