Migrant Smuggling Syndicate Busted Near Tebedu Border in Serian

Sebue, Jaya – 11 June 2025 – A major blow was dealt to human trafficking networks early this morning when the Security Monitoring and Enforcement Unit (UPKP) of the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) Sarawak successfully crippled a migrant smuggling syndicate operating near the Tebedu Land Entry Point, Serian.

Two coordinated raids under Ops Serkap and Ops Kutip, carried out at around 4:00 am, led to the arrest of 11 Indonesian nationals, comprising 8 men and 3 women. These individuals were believed to have been smuggled into Malaysia without proper travel documents and were found in a premise used as a transit headquarters for the illegal operation.

According to the authorities, the syndicate used the area as an illegal transit point before moving their victims out of Malaysia. The swift operation was the result of detailed intelligence work. Officers launched the raid just as the smuggled migrants arrived at the location, catching the syndicate off guard.

In addition to the arrests, enforcement teams also seized a vehicle estimated to be worth RM30,000, suspected to be used in transporting the undocumented migrants. This successful seizure is expected to help dismantle the syndicate’s logistics network.

All individuals arrested are currently detained at the Immigration Depot for further investigation. They will be probed under several key laws including the Immigration Act 1959/63, Immigration Regulations 1963, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (ATIPSOM).

This operation is part of a larger nationwide effort by the Immigration Department, particularly in Sarawak, to strengthen border security and crack down on illegal migration and human smuggling activities, especially in areas close to international borders. – Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia Sarawak
