KUCHING: The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) stands as a strategic cornerstone in ASEAN’s collective pursuit of a sustainable and resilient energy future.
Deputy Prime Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof described the APG not merely as an infrastructure initiative but as a transformative regional vision, enabling seamless cross-border electricity sharing that uplifts economies and fosters inclusive prosperity.
“By interconnecting national grids, ASEAN nations are laying the groundwork for a truly integrated regional energy market,” he said.
Speaking at the official dinner of the 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting on Energy (SOME) held at a prestigious hotel in Kuching on Monday, Dato Sri Fadillah stressed that realising the APG requires more than physical infrastructure.
“It needs strong political will, enhanced technical collaboration, and smart investment strategies. Alongside cables and control systems, we must build trust, governance frameworks, and data-sharing mechanisms,” he emphasised.
Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Openg, officiated the event, which brought together senior ASEAN energy policymakers and stakeholders.
Dato Sri Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, highlighted ASEAN’s diversity as a unique strength. He said this diversity, coupled with strategic geography and shared resources, can be leveraged to build a greener, more inclusive, and secure energy future.
He expressed confidence that the Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the ASEAN Power Grid, along with the upcoming ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2026–2030, will significantly accelerate energy connectivity across the region.
“These developments will be key drivers of economic growth for all ASEAN member states,” he concluded.
