KUCHING: The achievements of Sarawakians in innovation have proven that products derived from Borneo’s forests are capable of competing on the global stage, said Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He highlighted the successful innovation of Hexagon Highs, a local Sarawakian company, which recently launched HexaCOOL, a vehicle engine coolant that not only outperforms existing products but also promotes environmental sustainability by using recycled waste materials.
“This is not just a coolant. It’s an innovation that addresses global challenges using local resources,” said Dr Sim during Hexagon Highs’ 20th Anniversary Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.
He praised the company for collaborating with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 2019 to conduct rigorous testing on six different methods, examining the interaction between coolant, metal, and rubber components in engine systems.
A standout test was a journey to Kundasang, where a vehicle using commercial coolant previously broke down due to overheating. In contrast, the same vehicle equipped with HexaCOOL made the journey without issues after a year of testing, showcasing its durability and reliability.
Dr Sim emphasised that this success reflects Sarawak’s ability to generate globally competitive products despite being only a region within Malaysia, thanks to home-grown talent and innovation.
“HexaCOOL is a reflection of Sarawak’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility,” he added.
Also in attendance were Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Business Federation President Dato Sri Abang Abdul Karim Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Director Datuk Zahid Ismail, Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit Director Datu Dr Chai Khin Chung, Kuching South City Hall Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre CEO Dato Dr Charlie Yeo Tiong Chia.
