KUCHING: Sarawak has achieved over 90% teacher placement, with a strong focus on addressing critical subjects in rural schools, according to Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Sarawak’s Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development.
Speaking to the media after the Gawai Segulai Sejalai Ceremony at I-CATS University College on Thursday, he acknowledged challenges posed by teacher retirements and transfers but emphasized that student needs remain the priority.
“While achieving 100% placement is challenging, our priority is ensuring sufficient teachers for critical subjects, especially in rural areas,” Roland said, confirming that Sarawak’s teacher placement is currently at an adequate level.
The minister also highlighted the pivotal role of I-CATS University College in advancing Sarawak’s human capital development agenda, aligning with the state’s goal of becoming a developed region by 2030.
“I-CATS is a strategic institution driving talent and innovation, essential for Sarawak’s transformation,” he stated. He emphasized that the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) is committed to fostering an inclusive higher education ecosystem rooted in local culture.
Roland praised the Gawai celebration at I-CATS as a model of how educational institutions can preserve cultural heritage while connecting with global opportunities. “I-CATS is not just a knowledge hub, but a centre for talent development grounded in local values, producing graduates who excel technically and embody strong cultural identity,” he added.
MEITD supports I-CATS’ efforts to strengthen industry partnerships, expand international networks, and enhance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs tailored to Sarawak’s key sectors, including the digital economy, green energy, agricultural technology, and culturally based tourism. This aligns with MEITD’s mission to develop graduates who are both professionally skilled and deeply connected to Sarawak’s heritage.
