KUCHING — The newly completed St Peter’s Church in Padungan, Kuching, officially opens to the public this weekend with a series of consecration events. The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, attended by around 1,500 guests including government officials, Archbishop Simon Poh, church leaders, benefactors, and parishioners.
A commemorative book titled Anchoring in Tradition, Embracing Changes will be launched during the ceremony, alongside the dedication of a custom-built digital-pipe Allen organ, with performances by an 11-year-old soloist.
The celebrations continue Sunday evening, June 29, with a grand Consecration Mass at 7 p.m., expected to draw approximately 6,000 attendees. The new church seats around 1,000; overflow tents and the old church building will accommodate the rest.
The Gothic-inspired church, built at a cost of RM38 million and funded through parish donations and a RM2 million Sarawak government grant, stands as Kuching’s largest church, showcasing Italian-made stained glass featuring Dayak motifs and the Brooke crest.
Rector Fr Vincent Chin described St Peter’s as “a beacon of heritage, spirituality, and community” and highlighted it as a symbol of religious unity in Kuching’s multi-faith landscape.
The church, built in multiple phases since 2019, replaces the original 1949 structure and comprises the main worship hall, a columbarium completed in 2018, a parish hall, and a future hostel block
