Sarawak Premier: Journalism Ethics Paramount in AI Era

KUCHING — Journalists must uphold unwavering ethical standards when deploying artificial intelligence (AI) tools to preserve public trust and democratic integrity, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg declared at Wednesday’s Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 opening ceremony.

Addressing media professionals at a prominent local hotel, the Premier acknowledged AI’s operational benefits while stressing that core journalistic values remain non-negotiable.

“Journalism transcends event reporting—it’s a relentless pursuit of truth, amplification of marginalized voices, and accountability for power,” stated Abang Zohari. He reframed journalists as “guardians of public trust,” essential to societal cohesion.

The Premier cautioned that while AI streamlines workflows, it must not erode the profession’s human foundations: “Ethics emerge from your conscience, guiding what you seek to achieve. They form the sacred covenant between journalists and citizens.”

Abang Zohari detailed AI’s double-edged nature: efficiency gains risked compromising moral judgment if not governed by editorial principles. He urged newsrooms to deploy technology only where it enhances—not replaces—journalism’s democratic mission.

“Every algorithm lacks the moral compass to question power or empathize with the voiceless. That remains your irreplaceable role,” he emphasized before 300 attendees, including editors, policymakers, and digital innovators.

The Premier’s address framed SMeC 2025 as a critical response to industry-wide ethical pressures, with Sarawak positioning itself as a standard-bearer for responsible AI integration. His call aligns with global initiatives like the European Commission’s AI Act, which mandates transparency in automated content generation.
