RM880k Engkabang B Road Upgrade to Boost Serian Agribusiness

RM880k Engkabang B Road Upgrade to Boost Serian Agribusiness

SERIAN — A RM879,999 road upgrading project along Sungai Engkabang B’s 2-kilometre village artery commenced Thursday, poised to transform agricultural connectivity in Serian Division.

Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Datuk Martin Ben launched the works at Kampung Engkabang B Hall, emphasizing its role in unlocking commercial farming potential through improved transport infrastructure.

The Greater Kuching Development Coordination Agency (GKCDA)-funded initiative, implemented by JKR Sarawak Serian, includes comprehensive drainage replacement, stone base stabilization, and asphalt paving.

“This isn’t merely a road – it’s an economic catalyst,” stated Ben, the Kedup Assemblyman. “Farmers will gain reliable access to transport oil palm and other commodities, while new settlement areas become viable.”

Scheduled for completion by February 2, 2026, the eight-month project addresses chronic transport challenges in Serian’s agricultural belt. Current unpaved sections become impassable during rains, causing 30% crop spoilage according to 2024 district surveys.

The upgrade will connect 45 smallholdings to processing facilities in Serian town, reducing transport costs by an estimated RM150,000 annually for local growers.

Ben urged contractors to adhere strictly to JKR specifications and timelines. The project aligns with Sarawak’s Commodity Development Master plan targeting 15% productivity gains in rural agribusiness by 2030 through infrastructure modernization.

Village headman Sireng Katom confirmed farmers are preparing 120 hectares for new oil palm plantings pending road completion.
