KUCHING — Thousands gathered at Dataran Ibu Pertiwi this Sunday for the July installment of Sarawak’s monthly flag-raising ceremony, a powerful display of state pride ahead of Sarawak Day celebrations. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin officiated the event, reinforcing the ritual’s role in fostering unity and identity among Sarawakians since its 2024 inception.
The colossal Ibu Pertiwi flag – measuring 25 meters by 12.4 meters – ascended its 99.4-metre pole as the ceremonial centrepiece, now established as Kuching’s iconic symbol.
The proceedings commenced with a precision inspection of the DBKU Honour Guard, followed by resonant renditions of the state anthem “Ibu Pertiwiku” and a cultural performance by local artist Tini Tyrani showcasing Sarawak’s indigenous heritage through dance and song.
“This ceremony transcends ritual – it’s the heartbeat of our collective identity,” declared Minister Lee, noting attendance has grown 40% since the inaugural event presided by Premier Abang Johari Openg on July 28, 2024. The collaboration between DBKU and Sarawak’s Transport Ministry (MOTS) this month highlighted institutional commitment to preserving state traditions.
Held consistently on the first Sunday of each month, the public event attracts both residents and tourists. This edition featured enhanced accessibility services including sign language interpretation and senior citizen viewing platforms, ensuring inclusive participation.
DBKU Director Datuk Ibrahim Yusoff confirmed plans to install interactive historical displays around the square by year-end, deepening visitors’ connection to Sarawak’s journey.
