TATAU – In a swift show of support, Selangau Member of Parliament Edwin Banta has announced immediate financial assistance of RM2,000 for each affected lot or shophouse owner following the devastating fire at Pasar Sangan on 27 June.
During a walkabout session on Saturday, Edwin Banta said the cash assistance aims to ease the financial burden of victims who lost their businesses and property in the late-night fire.
“This is an immediate initiative to ease the financial burden of the victims while awaiting the results of the investigation and long-term recovery planning,” he said.
The fire destroyed nine non-permanent shop units, disrupting the main commercial activities in the area and severely affecting the livelihoods of local residents.
Two Suffer Injuries in Overnight Blaze
The blaze broke out around 12:56 midnight, injuring two individuals, aged 26 and 27, who suffered burns to their left hands and back. Firefighters successfully brought the fire under control by 8:20 am, using two hose lines with mechanical pumps.
Appreciation for Emergency Response
Edwin Banta expressed deep appreciation to the Fire and Rescue Department for their courage and efficiency in handling the situation and ensuring public safety.
He also reminded business owners to take fire safety measures seriously and consider upgrading fire prevention systems to prevent future incidents.
“My condolences to all the victims affected. May everyone be given the strength to get back up and all matters be made easier,” he added.
