KUCHING – Six local men have been arrested by the Padawan District Police in connection with a recent cable theft incident that went viral on social media.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 35, were apprehended after a 12-second video showing the crime was widely shared online. The video, recorded along Jalan Kunchit, caught the attention of the public and authorities when it began circulating around 2.30 pm on July 17.

According to Padawan Police Chief, Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division moved swiftly once the video surfaced. Between 8.00 pm and midnight on the same day, police launched a targeted intelligence operation that led to the successful arrest of the six individuals.

In addition to the arrests, police also seized four vehicles and tools believed to be used for cutting cables. These items are now being held as evidence.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which covers theft-related offences. All six men will be remanded to assist police with ongoing investigations.

Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity involving public infrastructure. He also thanked those who shared the video, which played a crucial role in the swift action taken.

“This is a reminder that stealing public property is not only illegal, but it also disrupts essential services for the community. We will not hesitate to take firm action,” he said.

The police are continuing their investigations to determine whether the suspects are linked to other similar crimes in the area.
