BETONG – The ongoing construction of Sarawak’s coastal road network is poised to become a transformative force in rural development across the state, according to Sarawak Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the Batang Seripat 1 Bridge on Saturday, the Premier described the infrastructure project as a “game changer” that will significantly improve connectivity, particularly for kampungs and longhouses in coastal areas.
“With the completion of this project, people will be able to connect directly to Kuching through the expanding highway network. We will also soon open the Rong Ya Bridge linking to the second trunk road, and by late 2026 or early 2027, the Batang Lupar Bridge is expected to be completed,” he said. “By 2030, Sarawak’s infrastructure will have a profound impact on rural development.”
The Batang Seripat 1 Bridge is part of a broader effort to modernise Sarawak’s transportation and economic infrastructure. With a total cost of approximately RM375 million, the bridge is expected to unlock new economic opportunities, especially in modern agriculture, for rural communities along the coast.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari also extended gratitude to the people of the Betong region for their cooperation in making the project a reality.
During the same event, he launched the Betong District Development Authority (BDDA), which will serve as a key agency in implementing strategic initiatives in the area. He also announced the approval of multiple development plans including:
- Reconstruction of the Betong Provincial and District Council offices
- Upgrading of electrical infrastructure to Phase 3 in the Betong area
- Establishment of agricultural parks in Fusa and Belating
The Premier later visited the Belating Fishermen’s Resettlement Area, where he handed over house keys to two beneficiaries and disbursed the Belating District Living Assistance Fund for 2025.
He concluded his visit with an inspection of the Fusa Belating Riverside Development Project, a RM45 million initiative that further reflects the state government’s commitment to holistic rural development.
The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Douglas and multiple deputy ministers from various development portfolios, showcasing the importance of the initiative at both state and federal levels.
