MIRI – Sarawak must continue to serve as a landmark of unity and religious harmony in a world increasingly divided by racial and religious tensions, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
In a speech read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the Other Religious Thanksgiving Ceremony held in conjunction with the Sarawak Day 2025 Celebration on Sunday, the Premier stressed that religious leaders play a pivotal role in fostering understanding among diverse communities.
“Many global conflicts today are rooted in mismanaged differences. In this context, religious leaders are instrumental in promoting interfaith dialogue and mutual respect across all races and beliefs,” he noted.
He highlighted that Sarawak stands out in Malaysia with its Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) — the only entity of its kind in the country — which has successfully built a stable and harmonious religious ecosystem. This unique approach has helped Sarawak become a role model of unity for the nation and beyond.
“Through UNIFOR, we will continue strengthening the infrastructure of religious institutions to ensure that every citizen enjoys freedom of religion and peace in worship,” he added.
The thanksgiving ceremony, held at a leading hotel in Miri, showcased Sarawak’s interfaith spirit with religious readings from multiple faiths, including Taoism, Sikhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the Bahá’í Faith. Leaders from each community participated in a symbolic and respectful order of worship, underscoring Sarawak’s multicultural fabric.
Among the distinguished guests were Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister of Food Industry and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, as well as various deputy ministers, departmental heads and dignitaries.
Sarawak’s continued emphasis on religious inclusion and mutual respect reflects its unwavering commitment to national unity and social cohesion — setting a strong example for the rest of Malaysia.
