Sarawak Government Continues to Strengthen Rural Education

LAWAS – Rural education remains a priority in Sarawak’s development agenda as the state government reaffirms its long-term commitment to strengthening the sector as a cornerstone for the state’s progress.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stated that inclusive and quality education is not only a governmental obligation but a strategic investment to ensure long-term prosperity, particularly for remote areas still facing infrastructure and access challenges.

The commitment was reflected in the presentation of educational assistance and Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants at a ceremony held yesterday at the Lawas District Council. The event, organised by the Bukit Sari Service Centre Education Bureau in collaboration with the Lawas District Office, was officiated by Awang Tengah, who also serves as Second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment, and Bukit Sari Assemblyman.

“Sarawak is very concerned about the development of education. We have allocated RM160 million to build and renovate dilapidated schools through the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA) under RECODA,” he said.

More than 200 locals witnessed the handover of MRP grants to 50 recipients and education aid to 65 eligible students under the Bukit Sari Education Bureau’s initiative.

Awang Tengah highlighted that although the initiative is in collaboration with the Federal Government, the Sarawak Government is taking independent steps to accelerate educational development.

He also announced a significant policy shift starting in 2026, where the Sarawak Government will fully fund tuition fees for Sarawakian students who gain entry to institutions of higher learning (IPT).

“This is clear proof that no Sarawakian should drop out just because of financial constraints,” he stressed, expressing hope that every Sarawakian family would eventually produce at least one graduate.

In addition to this, the government has rolled out supporting initiatives, including free laptops for first-time IPT entrants and book vouchers for students from families with a per capita income of RM1,500 or less.

During the same event, a special contribution was presented to Awangku Nasrullah Awangku Adenan, a young athlete from Lawas who recently won two gold medals in the shot put at an international championship in Singapore.

The ceremony coincided with Sarawak Day celebrations, held annually on July 22 to honour the state’s identity and struggle.
