The inaugural flight from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang) landed in Kuching on Monday, received by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who praised the addition as a boost for passenger flexibility and regional connectivity.

“Currently, all flights from the Klang Valley come through KLIA. This route from Subang provides an alternative for passengers who prefer an airport closer to the city,” said Dato Sri Lee at a press conference after welcoming the passengers.

He noted that many travellers still favour Subang Airport due to its convenient urban location, and the launch of this route caters directly to their needs.

Looking forward, the minister urged Batik Air to pioneer international routes directly from Sarawak, especially to key destinations in China and Korea.

“I hope Batik Air will consider launching the first international flight from Sarawak, such as to Shenzhen, Guangzhou or other cities in China. This would significantly promote Sarawak and position Batik Air as a leader in international connectivity from the state,” he said.

Currently, international routes from Sarawak are limited, with Scoot flying to Singapore, and AirAsia and Royal Brunei serving routes to Brunei and select destinations. The ministry is actively working with airlines to expand international offerings from Kuching and other Sarawak airports.

Dato Sri Lee expressed optimism that such collaborations will enhance tourism, business travel and economic growth in Sarawak, while also increasing the state’s visibility on the global aviation map.
