The progress was highlighted during a site visit on Tuesday by Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, who oversees the ministry. The ambitious project is being implemented by the Sibu Water Board, with a vision to double the plant’s treatment capacity from 150 million litres per day (MLD) to 300 MLD.

Key components of the upgrade include:

  • Phase 2 expansion of raw water intake capacity (150 MLD to 300 MLD)
  • Construction of an 8 km raw water pipeline using 1.4m diameter mild steel pipes
  • Full upgrade of the Salim Treatment Plant to 300 MLD
  • Modification of existing systems (sludge bridge, generator set, filters) in Phases 1 & 2
  • Installation of a 4 km treated water pipeline (2 km with 1.6m diameter, 2 km with 1.2m diameter)

The Sarawak Government is fully funding the RM291.4 million project, covering not just construction but also land acquisition, professional fees, and site supervision.

The contract was awarded via open tender to Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd on 18 April 2024, with a contract sum exceeding RM269 million. Work commenced on 20 May 2024, with the projected completion set for 25 June 2027.
