KOTA SAMARAHAN — The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) continues its active firefighting operations at the disused landfill site in Kampung Plaie, which has been emitting thick smoke since the fire broke out on July 27.
MPKS Chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali confirmed that firefighting operations were launched immediately upon receiving the report. However, the effort has been hindered by a number of obstacles, including hot and dry weather conditions, inaccessibility to the exact fire location, and the considerable distance from the nearest water source.
“These factors have contributed to thick smoke continuing to blanket nearby areas, particularly Kampung Sungai Batu,” he said.

To combat the blaze, MPKS is working in collaboration with the Samarahan District Fire and Rescue Station along with several other agencies. The response involves the deployment of heavy machinery such as excavators and bulldozers, as well as fire extinguishing equipment.
Additionally, MPKS has supplied two water tankers to bolster the ongoing operations, ensuring continuous water supply for firefighting teams.
Abang Ismawi urged the public to steer clear of the affected zone to prevent accidents and allow emergency responders to carry out their duties efficiently. He also called on the community to cooperate fully with the authorities to facilitate a safe and effective firefighting effort.
The operation is expected to continue until the fire is fully contained, with authorities closely monitoring air quality in the surrounding areas for public health and safety.
