LUBOK ANTU – A landslide occurred behind the Jelukong Longhouse here this evening following continuous heavy rainfall since early morning, triggering concerns for residents’ safety as the rainy season intensifies.
The Lubok Antu District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received a distress call at approximately 5.10pm from a local resident alerting authorities to the incident.
In response, a three-member team from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Lubok Antu District was promptly dispatched to the site to assess the situation.
District APM officer Lieutenant Desem Samuel confirmed that the landslide had taken place directly behind the longhouse and was likely caused by prolonged downpours that soaked the already vulnerable hillside.
“This is not the first time such an incident has happened in this area. Landslides have occurred here before, especially during the wet season,” he said.
Fortunately, no injuries or serious property damage were reported in the incident. However, the area remains at high risk, particularly if the rain continues in the coming days.
As a precaution, the authorities have placed warning tape around the affected zone to keep residents at a safe distance and to raise awareness of possible recurring movements.
Desem urged the public to stay vigilant and report any early signs of soil movement or potential landslides immediately to local authorities.
“The situation is under control for now, but we will maintain regular monitoring to ensure the safety of those living nearby,” he assured.
Local residents, especially those living near slopes, are reminded to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during heavy rain and to follow all safety advisories issued by the authorities.
