Sarawak Begins Gravity Piping Project to Boost Rural Water Supply in Opar

LUNDU – The Sarawak Government continues to strengthen its commitment to rural infrastructure development with the launch of the Gravity Piping System Project in the Opar constituency, benefiting three villages—Kampung Jantan, Kampung Jangkar, and Kampung Tebaro.

The site handover ceremony, organised by the Department of Rural Water Supply (JBALB) Lundu, was officiated by Opar State Assembly Member, Billy Sujang, on Monday. During the ceremony, he formally handed over the project site to appointed contractors to commence construction work in the near future.

Present at the event were Administrative Officer of the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), Badrulhisyam Muta-ee; JBALB Lundu Officer-in-Charge, Hastomo Tommy; and Lundu District Administrative Officer, Mohd Syafiie Ahmad.

The gravity-fed water supply system, part of GKCDA’s ongoing initiatives, is designed to provide clean water to remote inland communities using natural gravitational flow from water sources to households—eliminating the need for energy-intensive pump systems. This approach ensures long-term cost savings and is particularly effective in areas awaiting the construction of larger infrastructure, such as the planned Water Treatment Plant in Jalan Biawak.

Billy Sujang emphasised that reliable and sufficient water supply is fundamental to the development of rural communities.
“I hope this project can be completed according to the set schedule, so the villagers—who have long awaited this basic necessity—can benefit immediately,” he said.

This project reflects the Sarawak Government’s broader commitment to inclusive and balanced rural development under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). The successful implementation of such initiatives is expected to improve the quality of life for rural residents and bridge the infrastructure gap between urban and rural areas in the state.
