KOTA KINABALU – The Regional Islamic Propagation Council for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) has been urged to adapt its strategies in line with rapid technological change, particularly in the fields of digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI).
RISEAP President and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg emphasised that Islamic organisations must be prepared to modernise their approach to preaching and community engagement while safeguarding traditional values.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the RISEAP 2025 International Youth Leadership Training Programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Saturday, he underlined the importance of digital literacy and readiness.
“In an age shaped by AI, automation and digital communication, Muslims cannot be left behind. We must ensure our communities are equipped with the knowledge, tools and mindset needed to utilise technology for the benefit of the ummah,” he said.
He added that RISEAP envisions an environment where preachers are digitally empowered, smart technology enhances community development, and Islamic identity remains strong despite modern challenges.
The event, organised by RISEAP in partnership with the Sabah Islamic Organisation (USIA) and the Sabah Islamic NGO Council, was officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr) Musa Aman.
Abang Zohari also stressed that RISEAP’s role goes beyond supporting grassroots Islamic initiatives, as it also ensures the voices of minority Muslim communities are recognised in the broader global context. He said the organisation continues to champion values of wisdom, inclusiveness, moderation and cooperation in building a resilient and united ummah in the region.
Highlighting the importance of economic empowerment, he noted that RISEAP actively promotes Islamic financial instruments such as Baitulmal and Waqf, which play a role in alleviating poverty, funding dakwah activities and supporting long-term community development. He urged member organisations to revive and institutionalise these instruments, especially in Muslim minority areas.
Also present at the event were Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya, RISEAP Honorary Secretary General Dato Dr Mohamad Marzuki Omar, and USIA President Datuk Sapawi Ahmad.
